Every little bit of extra space helps, especially in a smaller home. We regularly see and read about fantastic remodels done in spacious homes with a large budget, and the results are impressive. But what about ‘normal’ homes? Even, or especially, people without large homes and budgets need more space in their home. As people work to find additional space in their homes, many look to the basement as their best and most cost-effective option.

 Zacharias and Holly Thorpe are perfect examples of this. The Thorpes bought a small home, their first, in July, 2007. Zacharias was discharged from active duty in the Air Force in December, 2007 and is working to earn a place on the Toledo fire department as a firefighter. The couple had their first child in January, 2008 and have been wanting to remodel their basement in order to provide their family with a recreation room and a quiet place to relax. The basement is quite small, and with the old windows and wood paneling it is dark, drafty and uncomfortable. However, it remains the Thorpes’ best option for adding space to their home. 

 While looking at different options, Zacharias entered the Owens Corning Basement Finishing System’s ‘Great Big Giveaway’ and was notified in January (while actually still in the hospital after the birth of their child). Because the basement is so small, Owens Corning decided to provide additional prizes, including new appliances and glass block windows in the basement that provide light and privacy and fix the draft problems.
